Early this week, TV Guide reported Alicia Silverstone was signing on for a multi-episode guest appearance on CBS’ comedy, How I Met Your Mother. The report says, Alicia will play love interest to Josh Radnor’s character, Ted….and may possibly be the answer to what viewers have been wanting to know since Season 1 — just who the heck is Mother?
But before fans like us could get excited over the prospect of finally meeting Mother, guess who ruined this but the most unlikely mother-figure of all — Britney Spears! Her reps supposedly contacted HIMYM a couple of weeks before, asking if BritBrit could get a guest spot on the show. The producers gave her the role of, Abby, who, according to E!, is "a girl who works in Ted’s doctor’s office. She’s described as "sweet and friendly and scattered and a little nerdy—a female Michael Cera."
Britney’s role is that of an assistant to the lady-doctor Ted is wooing. The lady-doctor, Stella, was supposed to be played by Alicia Silverstone.
Now I’m speaking in past tenses here, because early today, news broke out Alicia was backing out. With the addition of BritBrit, Alicia’s people decided to forego with the guest stint. Not while Britney’s there, they say. Because it would be too chaotic.
No one from the show is actually confirming this is the real reason. But word is, they would really like to have Alicia back, so much so that they’re creating a new character and new storyline to accommodate her in future episodes. And you’ve got to wonder why — will Alicia really be "Mother"?
Meantime, stepping in for Alicia Silverstone is Sarah Chalke, most familiar to Scrubs fans as Dr. Elliot Reed on Scrubs. Chalke is set to appear one time only.
This controversial episode is the 14th installment for Season 3 and is entitled TEN SESSIONS. | Spoiler TV
